This Rug From Revival Rugs Is Right At Home In The Playroom

Playroom with fun colors- designaddictmom

The size of a rug plays a great part in how a space functions and can make or break the design of the space. I recently updated the playroom with not only the ideal size rug but one of the softest rugs my feet have touched. I am talking about the handknotted Pepper Rug from Revival Rugs.  While I liked the rug that was in the playroom before, I knew that ideally it needed to be bigger especially since Cheyenne is always playing on the floor.

Pictured above is the rug that was in the playroom before. As you can see(even though it was an 8x10 size), it still needed to be bigger.

The Pepper Revival Rug pictured above is the perfect size at 9x12!  It covers a

generous amount of floor space so Cheyenne can safely play on the floor. When choosing this rug,

I also considered the other design details already  in the space; wall color, color of furnishings

and accessories, etc. I love the graphic element the checkered design of this rug adds to the space,

but its muted colors don't compete with the existing décor.

I Painted The Closet Doors In The Guest Bedroom

This post is sponsored by HGTV® Home by Sherwin-Williams, but all opinions are my own.

I Painted The Closet Doors In The Guest Bedroom-designaddictmom
Hi everyone! I know it comes as no surprise that I am sharing another paint upgrade- I mean am I never not painting? This is a quick one today though and one that I have been meaning to do for sometime since redoing the guest bedroom.

I Painted The Closet Doors In The Guest Bedroom-Before pic

I always felt like those white closet doors ought to be painted a blue color which would speak to the mural that’s behind the bed. Well here comes Aleutian (HGSW 3355), HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color of The Year to the rescue! This color is featured in their 2022 Color Collection of the Year, Softened Refuge. After prepping the surface for painting, I used a quart of the Aleutian paint in the Showcase Interior Paint & Primer product.

I love how the doors turned out and the blue is so subtle and serene. Do you have any painting projects that you want to wrap up before the year’s end? Well, if you do, be sure to make it a reality and check out the wonderful variety of colors available in the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams collection that is available only at Lowe’s. xx

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint

The post is sponsored by HGTV Home® by Sherwin Williams but all opinions are my own

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-designaddictmom

Our screened in porch got little use this Summer and that is a rarity! We were traveling for a bit  and when we weren't traveling, you could find me puttering in my outdoor garden. The screened in porch had become more of a walk through and was quite a dismal sight.

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-before pic-designaddictmom

Since the porch wasn’t in use, it had become neglected and it showed. It was screaming for a refresh and some tlc. I thought well now that it’s Fall, maybe it’s time to show the screened in porch some tlc with a quick refresh! And what better way to do that than with paint! You know how much I embrace the power of paint and the main feature of this transformation is all about the Power Of Paint

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-paint choices from HGTV Home by SW

Naturally the color scheme was going to be bold and to narrow down my choices I set out to Lowes to peruse the HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Collections that are available exclusively at Lowes. After looking at the color cards for the different collections, I settled on the Softer Side Collection for my main color choices.

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-mood board-designaddictmom

Above is a mood board of sorts with all the HGTV Home® by Sherwin Williams colors I chose for the project and pictured is one of my inspo pics. In addition to painting, I also planned on doing something fun with the floors using this stencil in the large 12 x 12 size also pictured on the mood board. This was going to be A LOT of painting and maybe not such a quick refresh after all!

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-before pic

This is a before pic of the porch after almost everything was cleared out. After removing everything, it was time to prep the space for painting. The porch was swept and cleaned before painting.

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-wall color choice-designaddictmom

For the walls as mentioned above, I opted for the Memorable Rose (HGSW 2045). However, unlike before, I decided to bathe not only the ceiling and the walls, but also the trim in the same color. Here is a look at the process:

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-painting process-designaddictmom

The walls were lightly sanded prior to painting and some areas needed some putty applied to even and smooth out the surfaces, then more sanding before painting.

Our Porch Refresh: The Power Of Paint-painting process-designaddictmom

Since the porch was painted a saturated purple, and not a neutral color,  it took two coats of paint to cover it.  As usual, be sure to allow the paint to dry between coats.

I also added a pop of zest to the space with the color Frolic (HGSW 1235) from the HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Vintage Finds Collection. In addition, the floors were prepped and base porch paint applied before starting the stenciling process using the color Black Magic (HGSW 6991) from the HGTV Home® by Sherwin Williams Soft Side Collection.

Thank goodness the hubby was around for this project as he tackled the stencil application on the floor. It took him about half a day to complete the stenciling. Below is a peek at how it all came together.

This planterific corner that I carved out on the porch is so welcoming and we love spending time out here! It’s hard to believe this was the same space.

We waited for  two days for the floor to fully cure before placing any furniture on it. And now the porch is back in business and is getting lots of use. I love these pretty colors together which are available in the HGTV Home® by Sherwin-Williams collection that is found exclusively at Lowes. xx

An Accent Wall Update with HGTV Home By Sherwin Williams.

This post is sponsored by HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams, but all opinions are my own.

An Accent Wall Update with HGTV Home By Sherwin Williams- designaddictmom

I am a big advocate of your home being a reflection of YOU, and for me that translates to expressing myself by unabashedly incorporating colors and patterns. One of the quickest ways to refresh a space is with paint and my home is the perfect example of this. However, I am often asked, “Well, what if I’m  a bit timid about color and don’t want to paint an entire room? How do I inject color into a space…?” Besides incorporating colorful accessories like pillows, rugs, etc., painting an accent wall is a great way to bring color into a space. Word on the interwebs regarding interior trends has stated that accent walls will soon be uncool or not trendy, but around these parts, we break free from trendy expectations and embrace self-expression. Therefore, if you want to paint an accent wall, do so.

An accent wall is a single wall in a room that is painted a different color than the rest. Today, we’re going to look at how I updated the above accent wall with a color by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams in their Showcase paint, available only at Lowe’s.

An Accent Wall Update with HGTV Home By Sherwin Williams.

This accent wall in the boys’ room was created to showcase their art and while the blue is a wonderful color, it has been a couple years since I painted that color and I felt it was time for a refresh! So off to Lowe’s I went to choose a color from HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams.

With the help of the boys, we looked through a couple colors from the collection and settled on a delicious green color called Kilkenny (HGSW1282) from the Color Pizzazz Color Collection

An Accent Wall Update with HGTV Home By Sherwin Williams.

Always be sure to prep the surface to be painted first. I lightly sanded, cleaned, and primed the wall before painting. I don’t typically tape the edges of the wall; instead, I use an angled brush with a steady hand to cut in. If you’re not yet comfortable doing that, then you should tape the edges before cutting in. After cutting in, then I paint using a Purdy roller – the right applicator is key to achieving a great finish.

Solid walls that don’t have windows or doors make for great accent walls. Color is affected by other adjoining colors and light, so keep that in mind when choosing the color for your accent wall. In the picture above, you can see that the accent wall gets lots of natural light, and since green and blue are analogous colors, the bold green accent wall goes beautifully with the rest of the room painted in a light blue.

That green is a delightful backdrop for the art and the boys love the new color! Do you have any accent walls in your home? If you don’t and are considering one, make it a reality and check out the wonderful variety of colors available in the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams collection that is available only at Lowe’s. xx

Lighting Updates With EcoSmart Bulbs From The Home Depot

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot.

Colorful guest bedroom with EcoSmart lighting bulbs-designaddictmom

EcoSmart bulbs available exclusively at the Home Depot

The amount of light and the quality of light in a space will greatly impact how that space is used or if it is used at all. I recently partnered with Home Depot to update the lighting in our guest bedroom and living room with their EcoSmart bulbs. These EcoSmart bulbs are exclusively available at The Home Depot.

After being home for over a year due to the Pandemic and working from home, I really took note of the quality of light in our spaces especially since a couple of our spaces were now serving double duty.   Lighting element in decorating is just as important as choosing one’s furniture. Light’s basic function is to be utilitarian. For utilitarian purposes, lighting can be broken down into these 3 categories; general illumination, local lighting, and accent lighting. When thinking of general illumination, this usually is about the total light available in a room. It must be sufficient to ensure safety of movement and should be of a high enough level for simple tasks. Local lighting is usually provided by table lamps and tends to raise the level of overall illumination. Accent lighting tends to focus on a specific need for e.g. spotlighting a favorite piece of art.

Improving lighting is very much linked to the type of light bulb you choose. In our guest bedroom, I noticed that a couple of the existing bulbs had darkened with age which was more than likely reducing the light output so it was time to switch them out, plus since an area in the room was now being used for virtual school, I wanted to try the Daylight bulbs. I went to Home Depot and bought the EcoSmart ST19 Dimmable Clear Glass Filament Vintage Edison LED Light Bulb Daylight as replacements. Each bulb is 40 watts but there are 15 bulbs total in this light fixture so combined, they are nice and bright. I love that they are also dimmable.

Quick tip: An accumulation of dust will also affect lighting efficiency, so bulbs should be wiped down occasionally with a damp cloth, HOWEVER, ONLY after they have been removed from the lamp.

In addition to the ceiling light, the bedside table bulbs were also updated. I updated those bulbs with the EcoSmart 60 Watt Replacement A19 Dimmable LED Light Soft White. The Ecosmart LED light bulb is said to  represent a huge cost savings to the consumer, both in terms of the reduced use of electricity coupled with savings on replacement costs versus traditional bulbs.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star site, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with a bulb bearing the Energy Star label, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save roughly $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.

Choosing EcoSmart Light Bulbs from The Home Depot is a great way to reduce your environmental footprint as they have

*Energy efficient star rating with lower pricing and higher quality
*Lots of design options as in a variety of base options, colors, etc.
*Innovative features like motion sensors and being wet and damp rated

I love the efficiency they bring to the spaces too! xx

Our New VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights In The Sunroom

Our New VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights In The Sunroom-designaddictmom
I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I would be unveiling a couple more projects, well, this is one of them. I am thrilled to have partnered with Velux USA to add these amazing VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights in the Sunroom. It's no secret that I am a big fan of natural light as you always see  always chasing the light around our home on Instagram plus all my plants in the sunroom need all the natural light they can get; ESPECIALLY Glory The Fig. Therefore adding VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights in the sunroom don't only add aesthetic beauty but also make the sunroom an even more efficient habitat for the plants. O.K., let's take a look at a bit of the process, shall we?

Our New VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights In The Sunroom-designaddictmom
Before installation, I met with the installation crew from Sun4Light.  Sun4Light serves the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Pinehurst, Wilmington and Greensboro, NC. and they made sure the sunroom was in a location that was compatible with the criteria/requirements required for skylight installation. Once they determined that the sunroom met the requirements, we were all set! The pic above shows a bit of the initial process with painter's tape being used to mark of the skylights' placement in the ceiling and the space being prepped for installation.

Next was making the openings in the ceiling by removing the drywall. I was so giddy with excitement at this stage!

And then it was time to secure the VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights in place. The skylights are equipped with an acoustic rain sensor that closes the skylight at the first sign of rain. How cool is that! If you've ever considered getting skylights, you can use the Find An Installer feature on the Velux site simply by entering your zip code.

The VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights are solar powered, so no wiring is required during installation. Although windows abound in the sunroom, the skylights will add all-day sunlight from above and the added benefit of opening automatically, using the VELUX Active system, to bring in fresh air.

The skylights  also have light filtering solar powered blinds that are remote or smartphone app controlled.
I love this feature because it makes it  possible for me to diffuse or filter sunlight coming in through the skylights. Another great feature is that they can also be opened with a smartphone app;  the VELUX Active with Netatmo  which enables automation.

A before pic to remind you of what this area looked like before. We removed the fan and replaced it with a modern light that we had(see below pic).

The plants are loving being able to see the sky and Glory is also enjoying her new views and fresh air. I am curious and excited  to see how she'll grow now that she has light above.

If I have you excited and wanting your own skylights, great news- VELUX offers virtual design consultations, so you can explore skylights and ask questions from the comfort of your home.  The consultant can help you understand what rooms are good candidates for skylights, answer questions about the products and recommend an installer in your area.
