Amazing Wallpaper Ideas for Kids' Rooms

Amazing Wallpaper Ideas for Kids' Rooms- design addict mom
It's been a bevy of design activity regarding the nursery for our baby girl and while the process is ongoing, one thing was certain, there would be wallpaper.  Although I've already chosen the wallpaper to be used, these wallpaper designs have me swooning! There are a few designs in today's post that had caught my eyes when I was wallpaper hunting for the nursery.

One of them is the 'Les Bidules'  shown above from  Pierre Frey (spotted on Handmade Charlotte)

This beautiful floral beauty from Molly Guy's home tour on Domino also caught my eye. It's Jardin creme by Nathalie Lété .

Tips to Consider For a Feng Shui Friendly Bedroom

Tips to Consider For a Feng Shui Friendly Bedroom- design addict mom
While I don't consider myself a feng shui expert, I am a fan of the art and have blogged about it here and here before.  What is feng shui?  Feng shui is the Chinese art or practice of creating harmonious surroundings that enhance the balance of yin and yang, as in arranging furniture or determining the siting of a house.

Now I know a number of people might think this is a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but to each their own. I designed my bedroom using feng shui elements with the help of feng shui expert and author, Jayme Barrett for the one room challenge and I can tell you from experience that there is validity to the art.

So, how feng shui friendly is your bedroom?

That first pic above is a great example for one of the feng shui elements recommended for the bedroom which is your bed should be grounded by a wall or a great headboard to provide protection while you sleep. It is recommended that we use headboards that are solid and made of wood. In addition,  an upholstered headboard offers an extra layer of protection and support while softening edges.

In my own bedroom pictured above, if you look closely, there are a couple of feng shui elements that are incorporated; balancing items is important so two nightstands on either side of the bed is great and also allowing equal space on either side of the bed helps to facilitate the flow of chi around the room. To maintain a healthy relationship, make sure you have cleared clutter, place items in pairs to evoke the energy of a couple (two candles, two lamps, two photos etc).

Bed Placement.  Once I styled my bedroom for a shoot and had placed the bed right in front of the doors as seen above. That is a big no no in feng shui. It is recommended that the bed be positioned as far from any door as possible. It’s also important that the bed not be in alignment with any door (bedroom, bathroom, or closet), or too much chi will flow toward the bed. This position is called the coffin or dead man position because when you lie down, your feet or head are facing the door. This is symbolic of how the dead are carried from the house through open doors. Yikes! So let's all try to avoid the corpse position if we can! In fact, I slept with this bed placement a few nights and could tell the difference. I didn't feel at ease at all versus when I sleep with the bed placement like in the pic shown above this one.

If you must place the bed across from the bathroom door, hang a mirror on the inside of the door facing the bathroom. This reflects any negative energy back into the bathroom. Keep the door closed at all times.

Although the door should be visible from the bed so you can see who enters your room, try not to position your bed so the door opens right into it or you're looking through the open doorway when you're in bed.

Mirror mirror on the wall or not...  Feng shui experts would rather you not have mirrors in the bedrooms as their energy can disrupt your sleep and invite infidelity. This can be a bit tricky though, don't you think? I don't currently have a mirror in our bedroom but it's not because of feng shui, but because I don't think I have the space for the one I want. I do have a mirror in our guest bedroom though.  However, not to worry, experts say if you do place a mirror or mirrors in your bedroom, just try not to have them directly opposite your bed as that type of placement can lead to bad dreams.

Plants in the bedroom. This is probably the one feng shui rule I struggle with most. One of these pics above was taken from a recent plants in the bedroom  post and as you can see, I love to have plants in the bedroom.

There is a bit of controversy about whether plants are allowed in the bedroom or not.  Some feng shui experts say no plants because they produce yang energy that disrupts sleep and the carbon dioxide they give off at night may further add to sleepless nights. Others say if your bedroom is big enough and plants are placed away from the bed, it's o.k. to have them, just not too many plants to overwhelm.

Also per feng shui rules, sharp thorn is full of negative energy so plants like the cactus is not recommended.  They are said to give off negative energy.  Though I still have plants in the bedroom, I have removed all the cacti and reduced the number of plants for a lighter feel. What are your thoughts on this- I know there are other plant lovers like me out there...

Some other feng shui tips to consider for the bedroom:

  • No  TV should be in the room
  • Choose bedroom art that is happy and filled with positive energy rather than sad or lonely images
  • Use candles or a dimmer to adjust the light levels in your bedroom
  • Close the bedroom door at night
It would take at least 3 posts to cover everything but these tips are a great starting point to creating a feng shui friendly bedroom.

Island Style in Ibiza, Spain

Island Style in Ibiza, Spain- design addict mom
This beautiful renovated country house, surrounded by so many palm trees and other tropical foliage  evokes island living and seems like a wonderful getaway for the homeowners and guests alike. Decorated with pieces from places like Bali, the interior also has an ethnic flair and the natural wood finishes and materials add beautiful organic elements to the design.

Real Talk, Real Moms: Chores and Responsibility

Real Talk, Real Moms: Chores and Responsibility- design addict mom
I am thrilled to be back participating in another segment of the Real Talk, Real Mom series and today, our topic focuses on chores and responsibility. How soon do you start to give your children chores? In my opinion, it's never too soon to start as long as your child is at an age where he/she comprehends simple instructions and can follow directions. Children who are given chores/responsibility tend to be more independent, responsible and go on to become self sufficient adults in the world.

Since they were much younger(about age 3), I started encouraging my boys to complete simple chores like picking up after themselves and replacing their toys in their bins after use in the playroom. There was no reward for completing the tasks, except the knowledge that they were helping their Mama to keep the house nice and tidy. I do praise them though when they complete their chores so they know that I appreciate what they are doing. I also find that singing while completing these tasks/chores make the activity fun.

As they've grown older, more chores have been added like self care ones; brushing their teeth, preparing for school, folding clothes, making the bed, taking care of the pets, etc.

I once printed these labels and placed them on my older son's dresser when he was learning how to put away his clothes and they helped tremendously to help him to place his clothes in the correct drawer.

Nowadays, he doesn't need the labels and knows exactly where the different items of clothing go.

Giving the boys chores not only helps to keep things running smoothly in the household but also gives them a sense of pride to be contributing to the family unit. They are willing to help and in fact sometimes even compete to complete a task:-). xx

A Master Bathroom Update Embraces the Dark Side (Before and After)

A Master Bathroom Update Embraces the Dark Side (Before and After)-design addict mom
I think I am taking this nesting thing next level, I mean no room is safe from my disapproving eyes or the relentless urge to have everything "just right" before baby number 3 comes. Recently, my disapproving glare decided it had enough of the Master bathroom bathed in cream. Seriously, cream walls do not belong in my home so I set to work diminishing all memory of these walls and embraced the dark side with my new paint color, Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain.

Here's an iphone snap to show the before. It looks so dingy:(.  I chose the Iron Mountain because I love how it complemented the brushed nickel finishes that I currently have in here and it makes the white molding and marble tiles pop.

I also love how the paint color picks up on the pretty wallpaper in the commode area.  Now when I come in here, my eyes are happy:-).  xx

This Artist's Home Does Not Disappoint

That pink wall is the perfect backdrop for the gallery wall- design addict mom

'The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,' says Beata Heuman, the interior designer of this wondrous home.  'I was told by the wife that her childhood dream was to have a house with a series of rooms each with its own distinct personality - Chinese, Japanese, American and so on. That would have been too much, but I did want to give the house variation and changes of mood.' This inversion of the usual dynamic - clients requiring encouragement to embrace bold decorative concepts - was an early characteristic of the project. 'It is one thing looking at something and thinking it is cool. It is very different living with it,' says Beata. 'I wanted the house to be fun and uplifting, but also comfortable and not too "full on".'

I would say mission accomplished! This home is such a visual delight...
