What Happens When a Traditional Builder Constructs for Me...

IMG_8856
I remember the first day I met my very traditional builder and his look of sheer “you must be kidding me look” when I told him what my vision was for the house. However, thankfully I didn’t scare him off, in fact he said he was up for the challenge. Nonetheless, my idea for painted garage doors and a yellow front door wasn’t met with much enthusiasm, but he succumbed to my charm(or maybe he realized that i do know a thing or two:-))as you can see from these pictures.

I wanted to have the garage doors painted  the  same colour as the rest of the house simply because I wanted a seamless look. I didn’t want the garage doors to contrast or stand out and that is what would’ve happened if they were left white(the colour/stain they had originally) or if they were painted in the trim colour. Additionally, I knew that I was going to be staining/painting the front door with a lovely pop of colour and I wanted that to be the focal point.

What a pop, right?  The colour is called Yellow Highlighter by Benjamin Moore. Now, imagine how lovely it’s all going to look once the lights are put in on  the exterior  and all that dirt replaced with nice green grass and some  beautiful landscaping.  All of those missing elements will/should add warmth to the overall look and anchor my bright yellow door. Plus, i think with these colours, Spring may just get here sooner than later!

I will be addressing my decisions on interior colours shortly. Also, if you’re curious about the other exterior colours of the house, see here for more information. The end is finally in sight (fingers crossed that we won’t get any more snow) and I am just jumping out of my skin with enthusiasm! So, did you all have a great weekend? We went to lovely Charlotte this weekend and I was blown away by the architecture of the historic and modern buildings. The houses there are so majestic too!  Welcome to Monday my friends. XX

  1. STACY! I LOVE YOUR MIND! How perfectly appropriate to have the garage doors the same color so as to not draw attention to them! AND YOUR DOOR! YES!!! I can see you are like me....your like symmetry, n'est-ce pas? The two sides with the lovely windows and then A FOCAL POINT! OH dearest, I know your anticipation! My husband finally got his industrial desk out of the front side room and it is now graced with my white settee; French doors lead into it with a marble fireplace and it now looks as it should. He is now moved into his NEW office and our crystal chandelier is coming next week! WE ARE HANGING ON TIGHT, and this spring you and I are going to HIT THE GROUND RUNNING with all the decorating and gardening. Peace and joy to you dearest, Anita

  4. TOTALLY agree with painting the garage doors the same color as the house! So often garages on the front stick out but this makes it look so great! (Can you tell ours sticks out and I dont like it? lol)

  7. Stacy, oh my goodness! You should have let me know you were in my backyard!! And on top of that, you'll just roll over when you hear that my front door is yellow! I actually painted it yellow right when we moved in 4 years ago. I gave into conformists, a tad with a trial of Tiffany blue, but I went back to yellow not too long ago on a warm winters day :) Your home is looking exceptional! XO

  13. Oooh, it's coming along nicely! You know, even though I have a color commitment problem, I will totally have a colored door when we buy a house.

  14. I can't wait to see the house when the landscape is finished...it's going to be beautiful. Love the yellow front door and of course the blue you choose. How lucky to have a builder/community allow such creative and fun colors. I can't even plant flowers around my mailbox because of our "rules" in my community! Happy Monday!! xoxo

I'm back reading blogs, finally this flu is letting me function again.
You know, I somehow knew that your door would be a bright color! I thought is would be orange, but yellow is almost close, I love the garagedoors painted, what a great idea! Your house is so beautiful already, it will look even better with you guys in it! Oh and I just finished reading your latests posts, love your hair straight! Big hugs,

  21. What a beautiful house, with amazing color! I think a yellow door is great. I totally agree with you about the color on the garage doors. Leaving them white would have made them stand out more. You know what you're talking about! :) Watch- this builder will like the idea and start to suggest it to others!!

  22. Good for you Stacie! You totally made the right decision. I will never understand why builders (and homeowners) want to emphasize the garage. The house is so lovely and I can't wait to see it when all the finishes are in place...Carol

  26. Oh you precious beauty, you! I just saw your comment pop up! Oh, you love the new header? I GOT A GREAT ONE COMING FOR SPRING! And Stacy, I truly want to give you a house warming party when you are ready. Those of us who know you are gonna be on pins and needles to see the great reveal! We are almost there, but by no means completely done with all the goodies I want to incorporate into my décor!

Sit back, dream, take in a movie or a glass of wine or cup of tea and ENJOY DEAREST! Anita

  27. How lucky for the builder that you knew exactly what you had in mind. That would've helped him a great deal. And btw, the house is gorgeous. The end result is quite seamless.

  28. wonderful choices! i like your style...love the yellow...'see how it shines for you.'(coldplay). just fabulous!

  29. your house is GORGEOUS!!! i adore the yellow door.

matching garage doors are somewhat common in my little neighborhood, which i thought was weird before, but now i kind of like. provided it's a nice color, taht is. some people have made some preeeeeetty funky choices out here. i like to refer to the color choices for our builder as "the north face: home edition." crack open a catalog, and you'll find the variety of colors we could choose from. :P

  30. Great call on painting the garage doors blue - to blend seamlessly! And, that door! Hello, happy!! I think having a signature color on your front door is one of the simpliest most effective ways to add interest to your curb appeal.

And...having lived in Charlotte, I totally agree about the architecture. Still miss that darling Southern town!

  31. Wow it looks fantastic - I almost think a bright red door would look perfect too, although I think I'm biased since a friends house was like that.. all white with a bright red door :)

Can't wait to see what you do indoors!
